It may seem that winch is a tiny machine, but you cannot underestimate the power of it. You can pull a tremendous amount of energy through the winch.
If you have the right tools and knowledge about rigging, you can double the power of your winch. It also helps to get over any tricky situation.
No one scared to pull the heavy loads nowadays. A proper winching system can remove the headache, and you may never be stuck in this kind of situation again. It is a mandatory machine when you are using a snatch block.
Tips and Guide on How to Double Winch Pulling Power
If you want to know how to double the winch power system, just follow the below steps.
Things you will Need
- 2 Rated Recovery Points
- Bow Shackles
- Winch Dampers
- Winch
- Winch Extension Straps
- Snatch block
- well-stocked recovery kit(wrenches, screwdriver, pliers, pair of wire cutters, extra wire rope, winch hook, etc.)
- gloves
- hook strap
- tree trunk protector
- backup parts( extra screw print shackle, snatch block, remote control unit)
- a fully charged conventional automotive winch battery
How to Choose the Right Winch
Different winches used to pull different types of loads. So you have to ensure the right winch for your job.
- If you are moving a vehicle stuck in the mud, you will need 4*4 winch.
- If you are moving a rolling weight like a wheel or something, you will need trailer winch.
Before you Pull
Before pulling, you should practice how to use winch because, in a real situation, you won’t get much time for the examination. Make sure the wire ropes stretched adequately. If you know the proper winching techniques, it will help you and others to keep safe.
Know the basic fundamentals of effective winching. Analyze the situation and make a whole plan before starting your work.
Use the right equipment for the situation and wear proper safety clothes and gloves. Do not hire anyone to operate the remote control switch and handle the wire rope.
Process of Double Winch Pulling
When would you need to double your winch pulling power? If you are really stuck deep in mud or in a situation where you winch is really going to struggle to pull you out.
Keep in mind that all your equipment should be able to handle that extra power. Just because your winch can support the load that does not mean else will be worked correctly.
Step 1: Set the Strap Around the Tree
First of all, set the strap around the tree and hold it better. You can use other types of recovery wire or ropes.
Connect the two sides with a shackle and tighten that up so that it can hold the snatch box properly.
Step 2: Set the Snatch Block
Now grab your winch line and wrap it, then spool out the winch and bring it over the tree. Adding the winch is done. Pulling does not need to use a motor, you can do it with the free spool. Check all the lines to make sure the winch will work fine.
After making the winch line, open the snatch block. Since you are going to doubling, the line will go finish pretty quick, especially when you need the winch to a remote spot. There will be a winch extension or winch line extension, but the more line you have of the winch, the more power your winch has.
Step 3: Hook Up the Snatch Block with Wire
It is though making some confusion for the users in between; double line winch pulls to single line winch pull and about how to provide energy using winch motors and batteries.
Set the wire or roof to the snatch block and hook it up with the loop (it doesn’t matter if you are using single line pull, double or triple).
Using Bumper of the Front of Your Vehicle
After got the snatch block and walked it back to the car to the front bumper or any recovery point where you are going to pull. The soft shackle is holding the bumper, which is located on the front of the vehicle.
Now go ahead and turn the engine on. You have to put a little tension on the line then go back to the snatch block. Also, make sure the rope is on there correctly.
The line should be nice and centered. This snatch block is going to double the pulling power, but it also goes half as slow, and the winch will spin slowly. But the car will be going to move correctly. Now you are ready to go winching.
Some Tricks to Move Stuck Vehicle (With Double Power)
There is some tricky way to double line pull. You can fill gas to the stuck car. Because when you pull the loads, it strains the winch and reduces gases. Also, you can dig around the stuck tires so that when you pull, the stuck vehicle can move quickly.
Pulling generates heat. You have to prevent the overheating so when you pull from long distance, take a short break sometimes. You can run your engine all the time for better results. Also, you can exchange the battery to a more powerful one so that it can provide enough juice when pulling.
Use a winch dumper when you are pulling. If you do not have it, you can use a sleeping bag instead of it. Do not keep the lines on the ground. Otherwise, any obstacles may tear the line.
Winch Rigging Technique
The different winching situation has different winching technique. The range would be too little too long. You have to understand what method is correct for the situation. The single, double, or triple line refers to different rigging techniques.
How to Change the Pulling Direction
Although you are using a single line pull, double line, or triple line operation, all those needs a straight line from the winch to the object being pulled.
Because this straight-line increase the pulling efficiency and minimize the damage of rope. Snatch block helps to change the pulling direction, whether you are working at a 90-degree angle or more.
Double Line Rigging Technique
The more layers of wire rope you use, the more pulling power will decrease. So the snatch block will increase the strength. Feed the winch hook by wire rope in enough quantity.
Run the wire through the hook and snatch block. After disengaging the clutch, your snatch block can pull enough cable to the anchor point. The anchor point should be appropriately secured. Do not overtighten the shackle there.
Triple Line Rigging Technique
The triple line techniques are the same as the double line. Just you have to keep a 90-degree angle between the winch and wire to the anchor point and snatch block.
Secure the rope properly. Inspect all the connections and remove any debris from the area for better results.
Comparison of Winch Pull Power
If you do not know which winch is right for you, you should calculate the winch rating by taking the vehicle weight and multiplying it by 1.5, then you will get the minimum winch size.
But this is not certain. You may need more winch capacity for your intended usage.
The most common case is stuck in the mud, and mud has an incredible suction force, which makes your vehicle stuck firmly.
You need to calculate vehicle curb weight, gross vehicle weight like fuel, lubricant, coolant, personal equipment, etc.
Recommended Winch Capacity
You can use a smooth formula,
Gross vehicle weight*2.0= minimum winch size.
5000 L.B truck*2.0= 10,000 L.B winch minimum.
Weight to winch ratio
Gross vehicle weight (lbs) | Suggested winch (lbs) |
4900 | 8500/9000 |
5700 | 8500/900 |
6600 | 9000/10000/12500 |
6834 | 9000/10000/12500 |
7000 | 10000/12000 |
7200 | 10000/12500 |
The right ATV winch capacity
vehicle | Weight range (lbs) | Suggested winch (lbs) |
Less than 350cc | 400-500 | 2000 |
350cc-500cc | 500-700 | 2500 |
Greater than 500cc | 700-900 | 3000 |
UTV/side by side | 700-1000 | 4000 |
How do you Increase the Speed of Winch?
If you want to increase the speed of winch, you may surely lose the pulling power. Although you can replace the winch with a larger one which has a planetary gear set in it. Avoid using off brand winches which tend to be slower. Hydraulic winches are pretty quick. But the pressure should be right in both ways. And you can not use them in small capacities Also you have to maintain the balance between power & cable speed. Wrap the spool full of cable. If the diameter is big, you can wrap more cable in it.
2 speed winch is also better for pulling. Test your winch if it works better having the engine off and on.
Maintenance
- Inspect the wire before and after the operation. If the wires are kinked or frayed, replace them with new ones.
- Inspect the winch hook or hook pins if there are any damages.
- Keep away the winch, wire, and remote control from any type of contaminants. Clean all the debris and check all the equipment properly before store it.
- Do not use a winch for a long time, it will affect the car battery. Before winching, check all the cables and nut properly.
